I believe she is the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Marks. There is a birth registration #004754 80, issued to an illegitimate female, mother Hannah Marks, born July 17, 1880 in the Bermuda Lying in Hospital in Toronto. This has been the only registration found to date.

She is recorded as: Carmoody, Bertha, female, head, married, Born July 1878 in Ontario, age 33, of English origin, Canadian nationality, Baptist, not working, able to read, write and speak English. Florence Kathalene Carmoody, Bertha Matilda Margery Carmoody, William John Carmoody, Frederick Morris Carmoody, Victor Andrews Carmoody and Nickolas Tsimbidis also appeared in the household.

Elizabeth Bertha Shaw and William John Carmoody were divorced on 20 December 1912. William deserted Bertha and the five children shortly after moving to Victoria.
