On June 16, 1916, he entered the military hospital in Kent for arthritis in his hip. After a stay of 20 days, they were unable to find anything wrong with his hip. He was then sent to a convalescence hospital for 4 days. He then was sent to the Epsom hospital and stayed for 31 days. Thirteen days later, he entered the Shorncliffe military hospital to be treated for gonorrhea, stayed for 4 days, then was sent to the Barnwell military hospital. He stayed there for 110 days receiving treatment for the gonorrhea. He was discharged for duty on Dec. 31, 1916, He was also suffering from scabies. He returned to Canada on the Olympic May 21, 1917. Joseph and Ethel May LaBallister, daughter of John George LaBallister and Maria Elizabeth Hattie, were married by Reverend W. E. Wilson on Friday, 2 March 1923 at 146 Amelia Street, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada. He was recorded as a Cartage Agent, bachelor, age 28, Methodist, living at 146 Amelia Street, Toronto. She was listed as a widow, aged 32, Methodist, living at 146 Amelia Street, Toronto, and they were both able to read and write. Mrs. Edith Dixon and S. Alkenbrac witnessed the marriage. Joseph died on Wednesday, 9 September 1964 at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 67 years, 8 months and 4 days.
